May is Mental Health Month, and as someone who wakes up every day striving to live a life of wellness, I am excited to be a part of the movement surrounding stigma-free conversation on mental health and illness. Mental health affects everyone differently, and no one story defines us all. We are here to support each other, and break down the barriers to self-care and community support.
I am starting with something simple...because mental illness is not.
Seriously, though. All jokes aside, SELF CHECK-INS ARE IMPORTANT.
They may seem small, when tackling something that feels controlling and beyond ourselves, but that is why they are so important.
Some of you may have been doing this for years, and some of you may be new to the idea of reflection. Either way, all are welcome!
We enter each day carrying our bodies, minds, and selves. We experience thoughts, and emotions continuously...but are we checking in with them?
Are you taking the time to consider how you've been feeling? What has been the focus of your thoughts? What do you want to give priority to? What can you do for yourself?
Life happens quickly, and we often get set in routine, in acceptance, in a lack of motivation.
We forget to take the time to sit. To breathe. And to speak with ourselves. Are you happy with where you're at? Are you working towards any goals? Do you need to slow down? Do you need to take time to breathe? Do you feel supported? Are you happy?
It may take a few check-ins to answer these questions. It may take time and reflection--That is okay. Mental wellness is a journey, and illness does not come when its convenient. Sometimes it takes more effort to know ourselves, than we think.
Maybe you've set some goals, and are feeling proud of your accomplishments.
Maybe you've been working so hard to simply wake up every morning and tackle the day.
Maybe you've needed to be patient with yourself and accept what you can achieve in the moment.
Maybe you've reached out for support.
Maybe you've gone outside of your comfort zone.
Maybe you've been in a place that you worked hard to get to and you are feeling at ease.
Maybe you are still learning what you need.
This is all okay.
Self-care is a process.
BUT, you deserve it and it is necessary.
You deserve to be challenged, to be supported, and to be patient with yourself. You deserve to CHECK-IN.
Ask yourself these questions. Write down your answers. Do it again in a few days or a few weeks.
Are you doing okay? Or, do you need support?
Take the time for YOU.
Recognize your worth, and make the efforts to look after yourself.
You've got this. (And if you don't, the mental health community is here for you. Seek support!)
With love, someone who's creating space.
